When trying to put something into your own words for a writing assignment, have you ever been tempted to just let a computer program do it for you?<\/p>\n

If you search the internet for \u201carticle rewriter\u201d, you\u2019ll find there are plenty of tools available online that allow you to paste in a piece of writing and have it reworded, but are they any use?<\/p>\n

We won\u2019t name it, but we visited one and put this phrase into it:<\/p>\n

\u201cA rolling stone gathers no moss.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It took our well-known proverb and returned:<\/p>\n

\u201cA drifter assembles no greenery.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The positive, to be fair to the tool, is that it recognised that \u201crolling stone\u201d is a metaphor and replaced it with \u201cdrifter\u201d, rather than replacing both words and coming back with something like \u201cpirouetting pebble\u201d.<\/p>\n

The rest of it is not so good though. Although moss is usually green, it has a different meaning to \u201cgreenery\u201d, which is something that implies vibrance rather than the stagnancy we usually associate with moss. Moss is hardly something we \u201cassemble\u201d either.<\/p>\n
